  • Description

For thousands of years, Egypt and Sudan have been neighbouring countries linked by culture, religion and language. Now, a number of agreements on joint ventures and policies are strengthening these ties. Most of the recent moves on co-operation date from a meeting in Cairo four years ago, when Egypt and Sudan agreed on the "political and economic integration" of their two countries. Since then a number of joint projects have been started, among a company set up with the aim of cultivating vast areas of land in the Blue Nile Province. There has also been co-operation in transport, culture, and eduction.

SYNOPSIS: The latest meeting between delegates of the two countries took place in a hotel in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, on Monday (20 March). Delegates talked of ways of modifying the laws of Egypt and Sudan -- they are trying to integrate many legal aspects. It was the first time the joint Law Commission had met. Its leader is the Attorney General of Sudan, Dr. Hassan Omer. Egypt's delegation is led by Justice Minister, Mr. Ahmed Talaat.

Later, when newly-appointed governments of Sudan provinces attended a banquet, Sudanese-Egyptian relations were again a central topic. The gathering followed recent elections in Khartoum to elect the country's new National Assembly. The poll was called in December last year.
