Background: HAYMAN ISLAND -- ONE OF THE BARRIER REEF GROUP HIT BY CYCLONE ADA EARLIER THIS WEEK -- IS STRUGGLING BACK TO NORMAL AFTER BEING NEARLY FLATTENED BY THE FORCE OF THE STORM.
THE CYCLONE WITH WINDS UP TO 100 MPH (160 KMH) STRUCK THREE ISLANDS IN THE GROUP BEFORE VEERING AWAY TO THE MAINLAND WHERE IT HIT THE SMALL TOWN OF PROSERPINE. AT LEAST ONE PERSON DIED AND SIX ARE MISSING AND BELIEVED DROWNED. AT THE HEIGHT OF THE STORM, PLEASURE CRAFT WERE SMASHED AND LUXURY HOTELS RAZED. MOST BUILDINGS HAD LOST THEIR ROOFS. BRICK WALLS CRUMBLED AND DEBRIS WAS SCATTERED IN ALL DIRECTIONS.
THE DAMAGE IS ESTIMATED TO BE WELL OVER A MILLION AUSTRALIAN DOLLARS (ABOUT GBP450,000) AND A QUEENSLAND STATE GOVERNMENT MINISTER HAS BEEN APPOINTED TO ORGANISE RECOVERY OPERATIONS.
AT LEAST ONE DEATH AT HAYMAN WAS CAUSED BY HOLIDAY CABINS ROLLING OFF RAISED FOUNDATIONS AND CAVING IN ON ACCUPANTS. THE ISLAND WAS LEFT WITHOUT POWER, SEWERAGE AND VERY LITTLE FRESH WATER.
POLICE REPORTED THAT LOOTERS HAD MOVED IN AND SECURITY PATROLS HAD TO BE INCREASED TO PREVENT THEM FROM STRIPPING HOMES.
