Background: INTRODUCTION: A jail riot in Colombia. Two prisoners were killed and 48 seriously wounded when police and troops used tear gas and guns to quell a riot this week (4 August) in the country's largest prison.

    SYNOPSIS:
About a hundred prisoners were involved in the riot at the prison in the capital, Bogota. For eight hours, they occupied the roofs of the prison to support their demand for a new director.

At one point, firemen were called in to try to force the rioters to come down by spraying them with water at high pressure. But the prisoners retaliated by hurling bricks and tiles at the firemen, who were forced to retreat.

The prison authorities then decided to call police reinforcements.

One prisoner was killed when police marksmen opened fire. The other rioters made a point of showing his body to the police. But the rioting went on.

A priest was called in to try to reason with the rioters. This move failed, and the authorities sent for troops as the fighting became fiercer, with the rioters throwing petrol bombs and rolling concrete pipes from the roof. Four policemen were injured, and there were more casualties among the rioters.

Eventually, the authorities regained control. They set a figure for the damage at 100,000 dollars. The rioters, led, the authorities, have now been dispersed among several other prisons.
