A MOUNTAIN RESCUE TEAM LED BY AN AMERICAN ALPINIST TODAY (SUNDAY) REACHED TWO GERMAN MOUNTAINEERS WHO HAD BEEN STRANDED ON A LEDGE 12 THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED FEET (3,754 METRES) UP MONT BLANC FOR THE PAST EIGHT DAYS.

THE RESCUE PARTY AND THE TWO CLIMBERS LATE TONIGHT WERE MAKING THEIR WAY DOWN THE MOUNTAIN TO A SPOT WHERE A HELICOPTER COULD PICK THEM UP.

THE TWO TRAPPED CLIMBERS WERE GIVEN WATER AND FOOD, AND PART FROM BEING VERY TIRED THEY WERE REPORTED TO BE OTHERWISE IN GOOD HEALTH. THEY HAD NOT EATEN FOR FOUR DAYS AND HAD TO ENDURE TEMPERATURES OF MINUS TEN DEGREES CENTIGRADE AT NIGHT.

IT WAS THE LARGEST RESCUE OPERATION EVER CONDUCTED ON MONT BLANC WITH MORE THAN SEVENTY EXPERIENCED CLIMBERS TAKING PART.

ONE CLIMBER, A GERMAN, A WAS KILLED DURING THE OPERATION WHEN HE APPARENTLY SLIPPED AND WAS STRANGLED BY HIS CLIMBING ROPE. TWO OTHER CLIMBERS, BOTH REPORTED TO BE BRITISH, WERE SWEPT TO THEIR DEATHS IN AN AVALANCHE, ALTHOUGH IN NOT CLEAR IF THEY WERE PARTICIPATING IN THE RESCUE.
