    THOUSANDS OF BANNER-CARRYING INDIAN WORKERS MARCHED THROUGH DELHI YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) IN PROTEST AGAINST THE RISING PRICE OF FOOD AND ESSENTIAL GOODS. IT WAS THE LATEST OF A NATION-WIDE SERIES OF DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT'S FOOD POLICY.

    OUTSIDE THE HOUSE OF MR. SANJIVAYA, INDIA'S UNION LABOUR MINISTER, THE VAST ASSEMBLY LISTENED TO SPEECHES BY LABOUR LEADERS. IT WAS ONE CAPITAL HAS SEEN.

    RECENTLY THE PRICE OF WHEAT SOARED IN INDIA, AND WITH IT THE PRICE OF ALL ESSENTIAL FOOD. THE OPPOSITION PARTIES HAVE LAUNCHED A SERIES OF DEMONSTRATIONS IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS AGAINST FOOD PRICES.

    ONE SUGGESTION TO EASE THE PROBLEM CAME RECENTLY FROM MR. PATIL, A FORMER MINISTER FOR FOOD. HE SUGGESTED AN AGREEMENT TO IMPORT TWENTY MILLION TONS OF SURPLUS FOOD GRAINS OVER THE NEXT FOUR YEARS FROM THE UNITED STATES. HE BELIEVES WASHINGTON IS "FAVOURABLY INCLINED" TO AN AGREEMENT TO SUPPLY INDIA WITH GRAIN AGAINST PAYMENT IN RUPEES.
