  • Description

Designers of Melbourne's recently opened Myer Music Bowl - John Gates, Balcombe Griffiths and Barry Patten - have received word from the American Institute of Architects that the Bowl has won an International Architectural award for 1959. Recent VISNEWS film shows the strikingly modern Bowl; Mrs. Sydney Myer, representing the Sidney myer Charitable Trust, donors of the Bowl, and Mr. Griffiths, a principal of the constructing architectural firm.

Mrs. Myer and Barry Pattern, 31-year-old designer closely associated with design and construction, were to receive the award - worth twenty-five thousand dollars - in American this month.

Award panel Judges agreed the Bowl was 1959's most significant work of architecture in which aluminium played a vital part. They described it as new, dramatic and functional, yet beautiful and dignified.

Costing GBP200,000, the Bowl occupies a ten-acre site, offering seating for 2000 people and accommodation for 20,000 on its surrounding lawns.

Sidney Myer, who died in 1934, founded Australia's largest store, the Myer Emporium in Melbourne, and was famous for his substantial benefactions to philanthropic causes. Of Jewish origin, he came to Australia from Poland in 1987. He was born in 1878.
