Background: Nigeria's President Alhaji Shehu Shehu Shagari has made a two day visit to the Niger Republic (19/20 March) for talks on the joint Industrial and Agricultural Development Commission set up between the neighbouring states nine years ago (1971). Under the auspices of the Joint Commission several bilateral agreements have been signed covering trade, transport, health and cultural matters.

SYNOPSIS: In only hi second visit outside Nigeria since assuming office in August 1979, President Shagari was welcomed by Niger's President Seyni Kountche at Niamey International Airport. After being introduced to the welcoming party, President Shagari said apart from the annual meeting of the Nigeria-Niger Joint Commission, the visit was also for friendship. Despite a temperature of one-hundred and twenty degrees fahrenheit (49 degrees celsius), a large crowd gathered to watch the two Presidents review a parade mounted by the Armed Forces of Niger. The welcoming party included members of the ruling military council, the diplomatic crops and community leaders.

After lunch at the Presidential Palace, it was down to business,starting with a tour of the 'ONERSOL' Solar Energy Centre, where research is carried out into the conversion of sunshine to power electrical irrigation, refrigeration and industrial units. The centre was set up in 1966 by the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), an organ of the United Nations Organisation, with the aim of researching solar energy application in developing countries. On his departure from Niger, the Nigerian President said he welcomed the new government in Rhodesia and he would continue to support the struggle for independence in Namibia.
