    General Gabriel Gauthier, Chief-of-Staff of the French Air Force, arrived in Moscow on Monday (21 June) together with six mirage fighters - the first Western military aircraft to land in Russia since World War Two. General Gauthier is in Moscow at the invitation of Pavel Kutakhov, Marshal of Aviation and Commander of the Soviet Air Force.

    On Wednesday, the French Mirages gave a demonstration with Soviet fighter Mig-21's in the first joint East-West demonstration of military aircraft since the Second World War.

    The aircraft flew back to base today (Friday), but General Gauthier continues his visit until the week-end, touring Central Asia and Leningrad.

    SYNOPSIS: Last Monday, the first Western military aircraft to land in the Soviet Union since the Second World War touched down in Moscow airport. They're the French Mirage - 3C fighters, and six of them came to Moscow on a friendly visit. In the last war, pilots of the Normandy-Neman squadron fought inside Russia. Now the squadron is particularly welcome. The high point of their visit was a demonstration together with Soviet Mig-21 fighters, on Wednesday. The six French fighters were parked alongside six Soviet fighters, and then the fighters were put through their paces.

    General Gabriel Gauthier, the Chief-of-Staff of the French air force arrived on a different aircraft. He was greeted, by Pavel Kutakhov, Commander of the Soviet Air Force and Marshall of Aviation. He issued the invitation.

    The French fighters returned to base on Friday, but General Gauthier remained to tour Central Asia and Leningrad.
