  • Description

President Nguyen Van Thieu on Monday spent the first full day of his second term as South Vietnamese Head of State in solemn National Day ceremonies, commemorating the overthrow of President Ngo Dinh Diem eight years ago.

The President and his wife attended a service in Saigon Cathedral, and then went to the Bien Hoa military cemetery where President Thieu lit a flame at the tomb of the unknown soldiers and Mrs. Thieu paid homage at the grave of General Do Cao Tri, killed earlier this year in a helicopter crash.

The following day (Tuesday) Madame Thieu attended similar ceremonies in the Cathedral and the cemetery to mourn the murder of President Diem the day following his overthrow. Large crowds attended the Tuesday events - apparently sanctioned by President Thieu - and gave rise to comment on the growth of a "Diem cult" in the four years since President Thieu came to power.
