  • Description

A SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT VETO ON THE APPOINTMENT OF AN AFRICAN TO A LECTURING POST AT CAPE TOWN UNIVERSITY AND PROMPTED A STUDENT SIT-IN AND STAFF RESIGNATIONS THIS WEEKEND. THE SIT-IN IS THOUGHT TO BE THE FIRST DEMONSTRATION OF ITS KIND BY THE NORMALLY OBEDIENT STUDENT BODY OF CAPE TOWN UNIVERSITY.

ON FRIDAY A SMOKE BOMB WAS TOSSED INTO THE UNIVERSITY'S ADMINISTRATION BLOCK, AND TWO MEN STUDENTS WERE TAKEN TO HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT. IT WAS THE FIRST NOTE OF VIOLENCE IN THE DELIBERATELY PACIFIC DEMONSTRATION. AUTHORITIES ARE SEARCHING FOR THE SMOKE-BOMB THROWERS.

THE GOVERNMENT CLAIMS THAT THE APPOINTMENT OF MR ARCHIE MEFEJE, WHO WOULD BE TEACHING WHITE STUDENTS, WOULD CONTRAVENE APARTHEID POLICY.

THE DEAN OF THE UNIVERSITY'S ARTS FACULTY, PROFESSOR MORRIS POPE, HAS ALREADY RESIGNED IN PROTEST AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT BAN, AND SEVEN MORE PROFESSORS AND 153 STAFF MEMBERS HAVE SINCE ANNOUNCED THEIR SUPPORT FOR THE SIT-IN.

SIMILAR PROTESTS ARE PLANNED IN JOHANNESBURG AND NATAL.
