Background: INTRODUCTION In Jerusalem, Israel's President Ephraim Katzir held the traditional presidential reception for leaders of Christian denominations on Thursday (30 December).

SYNOPSIS: The reception was held at President Katzir's residence in Jerusalem. Among the representatives were the leaders of the Greek Orthodox Church. All the major Christian faiths of the world were represented at the reception.

While the meeting was going on to promote tolerance between the Jewish and Christian faiths, Israeli members of the ruling Labour Party were meeting to discuss who should lead their party. They're choosing between the present Prime Minister, Mr. Yitzhak rabin, or the Defence Minister, Mr. Shimon Peres whom reuters news agency says are becoming increasingly intolerant of each others. Mr. Rabin only narrowly defeated Mr. Peres for leadership in 1974 to succeed Mrs. Golda Meir.

Mr. Rabin is also Minister for Religious Affairs and spoke at the President's reception.

Mr. Rabin said mutual tolerance among all faiths had been promoted during the last year. It was to be noted that in that time there had been an increase of Christian pilgrims to the Hold Land. On behalf of the Christian leaders, Archbishop Vassilios of the Greek Orthodox Church replied.
