    ON THE WESTERN COAST OF MALAYA, PORT SWETTENHAM HARBOUR IS BEING ENLARGED TO PROVIDE A BIGGER AND MODERN PORT.

    PORT SWETTENHAM WHICH IS 27 MILES FROM THE CAPITAL KUALA LUMPUR ON THE KLANG STRAITS, WILL HAVE THREE ADDITIONAL DEEP WATER BERTHS FOR OCEAN VESSELS. THE TOTAL ADDITIONAL WHARF FOOTAGE WILL BE 1,700 FEET AND THE ADDITIONS WILL COST NEARLY 13 MILLION U.S. DOLLARS OF WHICH $10 MILLION IS PROVIDED BY U.S. DEVELOPMENT LOAN FUND.

    THE CONSTRUCTION OF WHARFS BEGAN IN APRIL LAST YEAR AND IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED BY JULY 1963.

    PORT SWETTENHAM IS CURRENTLY HANDLING SMALL SHIPS BUT RANKS BELOW PENANG WHICH IS ALSO IN MALAYA. SINGAPORE HARBOUR, IN FACT, AS THE MAJOR PORT FOR MALAYA AS WELL.

    ENLARGED PORT SWETTENHAM WILL PROVIDE MALAYA WITH ITS OWN BIG PORT.
