  • Description

600 pupils and staff of Harrow Public School, UK, Nov. 12, gave Sir Winston Churchill a rousing welcome when he attended this year's "Songs" - annual hymn and Harrow school song recital.

An orchestra, half professional, half scholar, accompanied the singing. Sir Winston sat on the platform with his wife, Harrow Headmaster, Dr. James, and school governors.

This was Sir Winston's 19th. "Song" reunion. Pale and walking slowly he showed obvious signs of emotion at the welcome accorded him.

During the singing he heard M.A. Off-Ewing - son of Civil Lord of the Admiralty C.I. Orr-Ewing - sing the only solo, "Five Hundred Faces."
For the final song - the famous "Forty Years On " - Sir Winston rose to his feet and joined in the singing. For the last verse he remained silent - it was in his honour, written for his 80th. birthday, "Sixty Years On".

At the end he told the school, "We have had a grand performance. We have had indeed a memorable occasion."
