  • Description

Participants from 13 countries took part in the Winter Games for the Deaf in Lake Placid, New York, which ended on Saturday (8 February).

Opening ceremonies were held with the usual pageantry of international games.

On Thursday, the highlights were speed skating -- the newest event -- ice hockey and skiing.

Ice hockey presented a minor problem because of the pace of the sport Whistles which are crucial for both the stoppage and play had to be replaced by sign language.

Only the United States and Canada took part in the game, the Soviet Union decided at the last minute to withdraw.

As to be expected, skiing events were dominated by France, Switzerland and Italy.

The week-long games were described as very successful by their organisers, the International Committee of Silent Sports.
