  • Description

DEMONSTRATIONS HAVE CONTINUED IN NEW YORK, U.S.A., AGAINST THE CONTINUED TESTING OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS. THE LARGEST PROTEST SO FAR WAS BY A GROUP OF WOMEN, MORE THAN 1,000 STRONG, WHO GATHERED OUTSIDE THE UNITED NATIONS BUILDING, ON NOVEMBER 8.

THE WOMEN, CALLING THEMSELVES "MOTHERS FOR PEACE", BROUGHT WITH THEM SMALL CHILDREN AND BABIES TO ADD WEIGHT TO THEIR PLEAS. BESIDES PLACARDS STATING "WE WANT OUT CHILDREN TO GROW UP, NOT BLOW UP," AND "NO TESTS EAST OR WEST," THE MOTHERS CARRIED YELLOW BALLOONS THAT HAVE BECOME A SYMBOL IN THE DEMANDS FOR UNCONTAMINATED AIR.

ONE PLACARD ADVERTISED THE FACT THAT THE DEMONSTRATORS WOULD BE ADDRESSED BY THE UNITED STATES NUCLEAR TEST TREATY NEGOTIATOR, ARTHUR DEAN. MR. DEAN ARRIVED PROMPTLY AT THE APPOINTED TIME AND ADDRESSED THE WOMEN. AFTER LISTENING TO MR. DEAN AND ASKING SEVERAL QUESTIONS, THE WOMEN RELEASED THE BALLOONS, WHICH FLOATED UP BEFORE THE UNITED NATIONS BUILDING.
