Background: A WORKERS DEMONSTRATION IN THE CENTRE OF COPENHAGEN, THE DANISH CAPITAL, ATTRACTED MORE THAN 20,000 PEOPLE. THE DEMONSTRATION FOLLOWED A STRIKE BY MATES AND RADIO OPERATORS IN DENMARK'S MERCANTILE MARINE FOR MORE PAY AND BETTER CONDITIONS.

SITE FOR THE DEMONSTRATION WAS THE SQUARE IN FRONT OF CHRISTIANSBORG CASTLE, A GOVERNMENT OFFICE. AT FIRST THE DEMONSTRATION WAS PEACEFUL THEN A GROUP OF TROUBLE-MAKERS UPROOTED A TRAFFIC SIGN AND TRIED TO SMASH DOWN A DOOR. POLICE INTERVENED AND THE MEN DETAINED. LATER A DEPUTATION WAS RECEIVED BY GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS.

THE STRIKE HAS BROUGHT MOST SHIPPING SERVICES BETWEEN COPENHAGEN AND JUTLAND TO A STANDSTILL, HITTING THE BUILDING TRADE PARTICULARLY HARD AS MOST OF THE CAPITAL'S CEMENT COMES BY SHIP FROM JUTLAND. THE GOVERNMENT IS FORCING THROUGH LEGISLATION TO END THE STRIKE BY MEANS OF A BILL ORDERING THE DISPUTE TO GO TO COMPULSORY MEDIATION.
