    PRESIDENT KAMUZU BANDA OF MALAWI YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) ATTENDED A MILITARY PARADE IN ZOMBA TO MARK "KAMUZU DAY", THE CELEBRATION OF HIS OFFICIAL BIRTHDAY. PRESIDENT BANDA, WHO IS ALSO COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE MALAWI ARMY, REVIEWED A MARCH PAST OF THE MALAWI RIFLES.

    THE DAY IS AN ANNUAL NATIONAL HOLIDAY THROUGHOUT MALAWI. PRESIDENT BANDA WAS MET AT THE REVIEWING GROUND IN ZOMBA BY THE COMMANDER OF THE MALAWI ARMY, COLONEL LEWIS. TOGETHER THE TWO MEN INSPECTED THE MEMBERS OF THE REGIMENT.

    IN A SPEECH SHORTLY BEFORE THE REGIMENT TOOK PART IN A MARCH PAST, PRESIDENT BANDA SAID UNBIASED OBSERVERS OF AFRICAN AFFAIRS REGARDED THE UNITY OF THE PEOPLE OF MALAWI AS UNIQUE AMONG COUNTRIES OF CENTRAL AFRICA.

    DR. BANDA SAID IT MADE HIM VERY HAPPY TO SEE CO-OPERATION BETWEEN THE ARMY, POLICE, CIVIL SERVICE AND ORDINARY PEOPLE IN VILLAGES.

    HE PRESENTED LONG SERVICE AND GOOD CONDUCT MEDALS TO 13 OFFICERS AND NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS OF THE MALAWI RIFLES. THE PRESIDENT SAID THE MEDALS WERE "A TOKEN OF GRATITUDE AND APPRECIATION" FOR THE SERVICES THE ARMY HAD RENDERED THE PEOPLE.

    THE CEREMONY WAS ALSO MARKED BY A 21-GUN SALUTE.
