    AFTER FLYING ONLY 50 MISSIONS, ALL DURING THEIR FIRST MONTH IN VIETNAM, THE FIVE SURVIVING UNITED STATES F-111-1 SWING-WING BOMBERS RETURNED TO HAWAII ON WEDNESDAY (20 NOVEMBER). OF THE ORIGINAL 6 SENT OUT IN MARCH THREE CRASHED AND THE TWO REPLACEMENTS FLOWN IN NEVER SAW COMBAT.

    THE F-111-A'S HAVE BEEN STATIONED IN THAILAND. THEY WERE GROUNDED LAST AUGUST AFTER SEVEN OF THE 52 AIRCRAFT BUILT AT THE TIME HAD CRASHED IN COMBAT AND TRAINING FLIGHTS OVER VIETNAM AND OVER THE UNITED STATES.

    THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE HAS NOW CANCELLED 163 OF THEIR ORDERS FOR 253 OF THE F-111-B BOMBERS BEING BUILT BY THE GENERAL DYNAMICS CORPORATION. THE BRITISH ORDERS AND THE ORDERS OF 250 FOR A U.S. NAVY VERSION HAVE ALSO BEEN DROPPED. THE AUSTRALIAN PARLIAMENT HAS BEEN DEBATING WHETHER IT SHOULD CANCEL IT'S PURCHASE OF 24. THE F-111 COST 3 BILLION DOLLARS TO DEVELOP.

    INFORMED UNITED STATES SOURCES SUGGEST THAT THE BEST OF THE F-111 PROGRAMME WILL BE DROPPED UNDER THE NEW NIXON ADMINISTRATION, WHICH TAKES OFFICE AT THE END OF JANUARY.
