  • Description

KING CONSTANTINE OF GREECE TODAY ACCEPTED THE RESIGNATION OF HIS PRIME MINISTER, MR STEPHANOS STEPHANOPOULOS, AND ASKED THE GOVERNOR OF THE NATIONAL BANK OF GREECE, MR IOANNIS PARASKEVOPOULOS TO FORM A NEW GOVERNMENT.

MR STEPHANOPOULOS' GOVERNMENT FELL LATE YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) WHEN 99 NATIONAL RADICAL UNION DEPUTIES WITHDREW THEIR SUPPORT FROM HIM BECAUSE HE HAD IGNORED DEMANDS FOR THE RESIGNATION OF ONE OF HIS MINISTERS.

TODAY MR STEPHANOPOULOS WENT TO THE ROYAL PALACE IN ATHENS TO SUBMIT HIS CABINET'S RESIGNATION TO KING CONSTANTINE. IT IS THE SECOND TIME THE YOUNG MONARCH HAS HAD TO HANDLE A POLITICAL CRISIS IN THE PAST 18 MONTHS.

LATER, WHILE MR STEPHANOPOULOS WAS ATTENDING AN EMERGENCY MEETING OF HIS FORMER MINSTERS, KING CONSTANTINE SUMMONED OTHER POLITICAL LEADERS TO THE PALACE. HE ASKED MR PARASKEVOPOULOS TO FORM A NEW GOVERNMENT.

IN 1963, THE BANKER HEADED A GOVERNMENT IN SIMILAR CIRCUMSTANCES. AFTER A 90 MINUTE MEETING WITH THE KING TODAY, HE DECLINED TO SAY WHETHER HIS MANDATE WAS TO LEAD A CARETAKER ADMINISTRATION UNTIL AFTER A GENERAL ELECTION.
