Background: Uruguayan President Benito Nardone, continuing his visit to Italy, arrived in Rome from Milan November 29. Awaiting the President and his wife at Ostiense Station were the Italian President, Giovanni Gronchi, and his wife, and representatives of the Government, Roman Catholic Church and the Armed Forces.
President Nardone replied to a short address of welcome from President Gronchi. After reviewing a guard of honour, the party went to the Coliseum escorted by Corazzieri guards. These are the former Royal guards.
Here, President Nardone received a welcome from Rome's Mayor Cioccetti. Then they went to the Quirinal Palace - this time escorted by Corazzieri guards on horseback. President Nardone has said during his visit that he is of Italian extraction. His father, now over 90 years of age, worked as a porter in the sea-port of Gaeta.
