  • Description

First film showing the release of eight hostages who had been held by 1 Latin American refugee gunmen, has arrived from the scene of the siege in Buenos Aires
The hostages, who had been held captive since the refugees first seized the offices of the United Nations' High Commissioner for Refugees in Buenos Aires on Wednesday (8 October), were all in high spirits.

However, the gunmen kept a further five people prisoners while the delicate negotiations continued.

A spokesman for the refugees, it's believed they are Chileans, said their siege had been staged to draw attention to the living conditions in Argentina
A communique issued by their supporters said the refugee gunmen had been living in Argentina since the left-wing government of the late Salvador Allende was overthrown in Chile
It said their aim was to establish the right for people to leave Argentina and live in Europe.

When negotiations began the refugees asked for a plane o fly them to Sweden. Their second choice was Denmark and the third Belgium. In the end no European country would agree to accept them.

However, Algiers finally granted them visas
Finally on Saturday they boarded an Alitalia jet, stopping at Dakar, Milan and Rome. It is not known where they would change plane for Algiers
Before they left, the gunmen were joined by five of their relatives and two babies
The hostages wee all released unharmed at the airport, and the 56-hour siege was finally over
