  • Description

The Canadian Prime Minister, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, received the Freedom of the City of London in a colourful ceremony on Thursday (13 March).

Mr. Trudeau arrived at historic Guildhall in an open, horse-drawn landau -- in spite of heavy rain -- to a welcome by a guard of honour from the Honourable Artillery Company with the Regimental Colour and the Band and Corps of Drums of the Honourable Artillery Company.

Inside Guildhall, he was escorted to the Dais where he was greeted by the Lord Mayor and the Lord Mayoress and where the Freedom Ceremony took place. After adding his signature to the Roll of Fame, Mr. Trudeau left for Mansion House where he delivered a luncheon speech.

Mr. Trudeau was awarded the Freedom of the City "in recognition of his distinguished and valuable services to his Country and to the British Commonwealth of Nations". It is the highest honour the City has within its power to bestow.

Mr. Trudeau was on a four-day visit to London following a tour of European capitals to discuss Canada's future trading role with the European Economic Community.
