  • Description

ARMY UNITS TOOK OVER CONTROL IN SYRIA ON FRIDAY, IN A BLOODLESS COUP PLEDGED TO CLOSE FRIENDSHIP WITH THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC AND THE NEW GOVERNMENT OF NEIGHBOURING IRAQ.

FIRST FILMS OF THE RISING SHOW THE ACTUAL TAKE-OVER BY THE ARMY, AND THE JUBILANT WELCOME TO THE SOLDIERS IN DAMASCUS.

THE REVOLT BEGAN AT 6 A.M. LOCAL TIME. THE SYRIAN FRONTIERS WERE CLOSED AND COMMUNICATION WITH THE REST OF THE WORLD ERE HALTED.

THE TROOPS LET THEIR BARRACKS AND, LED BY BRIGADIER ZIAD HARIRY, QUICKLY ESTABLISHED ROAD BLOCKS AND CHECKPOINTS, BEFORE THEIR MOVE INTO THE CITY. BY MID-DAY GOVERNMENT TROOPS.

PRIME MINISTER KHALED AL AZEM TOOK REFUGE IN THE TURKISH EMBASSY NEXT DOOR TO HIS HOME. HE WAS LATER GRANTED ASYLUM.

ONE OF THE FIRST ACTIONS OF THE NEW "NATIONAL COUNCIL OF THE REVOLUTIONARY COMMAND" WAS TO BROADCAST OVER DAMASCUS RADIO. THEY CLAIMED THEIR ACTION WAS BECAUSE THE SYRIAN PEOPLE SUFFERED AFTER SECESSION FROM THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC IN SEPTEMBER, 1961. THE COUNCIL PLEDGED SUPPORT FOR ARAB UNITY, AND SAID IT SUPPORTED THE REVOLUTIONS IN THE YEMEN AND IRAQ -- BOTH OF WHICH HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED WITH PRO-NASSER ELEMENTS.
THE ARRIVAL OF THE TROOPS WAS ENTHUSIASTICALLY GREETED IN THE STREETS OF DAMASCUS. CROWDS LISTENED TO SPEAKERS PROCLAIMING THE SLOGANS OF "UNITY, FREEDOM AND SOCIALISM" -- THE SAME PLEDGES OF THE ARMY UPRISING WHICH OVERTHREW GENERAL KASSEM IN BAGHDAD LAST MONTH.
ALTHOUGH A CURFEW HAS BEEN IMPOSED AND TANKS AND ARMOURED VEHICLE ARE STILL IN POSITION IN THE STREETS, EYEWITNESS REPORTS SAY THE STREETS ARE QUIET AND THE NEW PRIME MINISTER, MR. SALAH EDDIN BITAR AND HIS GOVERNMENT, ARE FIRMLY IN CONTROL.
