  • Description

A series of strikes in Australia's oil industry have produced a serious shortage of petrol in the country, with the capital of New South Wales, Sydney, particularly hard hit. The situation has been aggravated by a breakdown at one of the city's biggest oil refineries.

SYNOPSIS: Petrol is in such short supply that only about one in twelve of Sydney's service stations are open for business....and even then they're severely restricting their hours. Motorists are forced to spend hours in long queues in the hope of getting a few gallons to keep them on the road. At some petrol stations, the police have been called to quieten frustrated motorists who found the petrol had run out when they reached the head of the queue.

The shortages were sparked off by a strike of tanker drivers several weeks ago. That was followed by a walk out by oil industry clerks. These stoppages were solved, but then the refinery broke down and replacement parts for the machinery have to be brought in form overseas.

But union officials say there is enough fuel getting through to service stations to end the drought, but for some reason it isn't reaching the public.
