  • Description

ABOUT 100,000 FARMERS FROM ALL PARTS OF ITALY MARCHED THROUGH ROME TODAY (THURSDAY) TO PROTEST AGAINST LIVING CONDITIONS. THE DEMONSTRATION WAS CALLED BY THE STRONGLY ANTI COMMUNIST SMALLHOLDERS' CONFEDERATION.

ITS THOUGHT THAT THE DEMONSTRATION WAS ORGANISED AS AN ANSWER TO THE RECENT DEMONSTRATIONS ORGANISED BY THE COMMUNIST PARTY.

THE FARMERS TRAVELLED INTO ROME IN BUSES FROM WIDELY SCATTERED AREAS. THEY CONVERGED ON THE PIAZZA DEL POPOLO AND THEN MARCHED BEHIND MORE THAN 30,000 ITALIAN FLAGS THROUGH THE CITY STREETS.

ONE OF THE ORGANISERS OF THE DEMONSTRATION, PAOLO BONOMI, ADDRESSED THE FARMERS AT THE END OF THE DEMONSTRATION. HE SAID MOVES SHOULD BE MADE FOR AN IMPROVEMENT IN FARM HOUSES, ROADS, ELECTRICAL POWER AND FARM MECHANISATION. HE SAID THAT THIS WOULD STOP THE GENERAL EXODUS OF FARMERS AND YOUNG PEOPLE FROM OUTLYING AREAS INTO THE CITIES.

THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS DURING THE DEMONSTRATION.
