An R-double-A-F Convair lands at Perth airport, bringing the Duke of Edinburgh for his Commonwealth Games visit. Shouting and clapping broke out among the crowd as the Duke stepped from the aircraft. He had arrived exactly on schedule after the ten-and-a-half hour flight from Canberra. A crowd of more than five-thousand gave the Duke a warm welcome. He was met on his arrival, first by the Governor, Sir Charles Gairdner.
Lady Gairdner, then the Premier and Mrs. Brand greeted the Royal visitor.
A silent crowd watched as the Duke took the Royal salute.
Press and television cameramen scurry for new positions as the Duke moves off to inspect the guard of honour, provided by Naval cadets from H.M.A.S. Leeuwin. Earlier this afternoon when his aircraft stopped over at Edinburgh Airfield near Adelaide for re-fuelling, the Duke took advantage of the three-quarter hour break to have a quick look at the Weapons Research Establishment at nearby Salisbury.
As the Duke moves towards his car, cheering again broke out from the crowd. Before he left, a private joke with the premier and Mrs. Brand... and then the Duke was on his way to Government House where another crowd was waiting at the gates to give him a warm welcome. He is to open the Commonwealth Games tomorrow afternoon.
