  • Description

Former French Justice Minister Francois Mitterand left Paris Palace of Justice Oct 24 after seeing investigating magistrate M.Clot and filing two law suits - defamation and attempted assassination - against ex-ultra Rightist Robert Pesquet as a result of an attempt on Mitterand's life.

The ex-Minister's car was sprayed with machine-gun bullets - seven hit it - on Friday Oct. 16. He dived from the vehicle and avoided injury. The two suits resulted from a statement by former Poujadist National Assembly Deputy Pesquet that the assassination bid was a 'stunt by Mitterand - arranged with Pesquet and a certain Abel Dahuron - to bring discredit on extreme Right-wingists who declare that 'Algeria is French.'
At a press conference M. Mitterand denied he had collaborated in the fake assassination attempt. He said Pesquet had warned his life was in danger and advised him (Mitterand) to take a certain route should his car ever be followed. It was along this route that the attempt was made.

To substantiate his story Pesquet posted a letter to himself - now in the hands of a bailiff - giving full details of the murder bid several hours before it happened.

He alleges firing at Mitterand's empty car while Mitterand crouched out of sight behind a nearby wall. Pesquest said he took part in the hoax in order to expose Mitterand. For this Mitterand sues for defamation. Abel Dahuron is included in the suit for attempted assassination.

Mitterand told his press conference: "Either I was shot down and therefore unable to speak for myself, or else in escaping - which was the case - I would fall into this plot of allegedly having faked the shooting. What could I have hoped for from faking such an absurd attempt and such an imbecile set-up? Would I ever have gone to Pesquet - the most hot-headed and most shut-off from any serious problem? He is an ultra of ultras."
For this Pesquet threatens to sue Mitterand for libel.
