Background: While much of Europe shivers through winter, a gay, summer festival air prevails in the French Riviera resort of Nice.
The reason for the gaiety is the annual Nice Carnival, which is 100 years old this year.
The carnival, whose origins go back to pagan festivals, is an excuse for two weeks of music, dancing, flower "battles" and processions.
SYNOPSIS: While much of Europe shivers this winter, the French Riviera resort of Nice has a gay summer look.
Thousands of visitors have flocked to this Mediterranean city for the centenary of the annual Nice Carnival. The celebrations are believed to be descended from ancient pagan rites. The advent of Christianity did not kill the festival -- merely altered its form.
The two-week long carnival is an excuse for processions, flower "battles", music and dancing, and all-round merry making. The fl???ts in this year's grand procession were recreated from the best designs that have appeared in Nice carnivals over the past one hundred years.
The fair sex was well represented. There was no evidence of the total abandonment which historians say characterised the pagan forerunner of the Nice Carnival. Onlookers seemed conte???t to just watch the colourful spectacle.
The varied national costumes on parade showed that the carnival has come a long way since its primitive beginnings.
