Background: A new international motor-cycling event was staged in Canada over the weekend (May 28) in the Montreal Olympic stadium to help pay off its outstanding debts. The event, billed as the Canadian Super-Motocross International, was sponsored by a brewery and given official recognition by the International Motocross Federation.

SYNOPSIS: Despite the international billing, there was only one rider from outside North America. The main race of the day on the artificial cross-country course saw some spectacular crashes --although without serious injury.

The prize-money was relatively small for an international meeting -- a total of 15,000 Canadian dollars -- and the stadium was largely empty of spectators as most of the big-name riders in North America stayed away. Number 12, Jimmy Ellis of the United States, partly attributed his victory in the main race -- the Molson Trophy -- to the lack of major competition.

Ellis, who got off to a good start, was for enough ahead of the field to avoid being held up by the second major crash of the trophy race.

Ellis rounds the final bends of the 21-lap race to take the trophy, and two and a half thousand dollars prize-money. He said part of his victory was due to his good start -- an important part of the relatively new indoor racing technique.
