    ISRAELI DEFENCE MINISTER MOSHE DAYAN YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) VISITED JERUSALEM'S OLD CITY TO INSPECT THE SCENE OF THE RECENT EVICTION OF ARAB FAMILIES NEAR THE FAMOUS WAILING WALL.

    SEVENTEEN ARAB FAMILIES WERE ORDERED TO LEAVE THEIR HOMES FOLLOWING BOMB EXPLOSIONS NEAR THE WALL LAST WEEK. IT WAS STATED THE ACTION WAS A SECURITY MEASURES AS THE BUILDINGS WERE STRATEGICALLY SITED ON THE APPROACHES OF THE WALL.

    THE DEFENCE MINISTER, IN A BRIEF VISIT TO THE CITY, TALKED TO SOME OF THE EVICTED ARABS AND EXPLAINED THE REASON FOR HIS GOVERNMENT'S ACTIONS.

    WITH MAYOR OF JERUSALEM TEDDY KOLLEK, HE INSPECTED THE HOUSES THAT WERE DEMOLISHED AFTER THE FAMILIES LEFT ON WEDNESDAY. IN ALL, MORE THAN 200 ARABS WERE EVICTED.

    TWO FAMILIES REFUSED TO LEAVE THEIR HOMES BUT EVENTUALLY DECIDED TO CO-OPERATE WHEN PARATROOPERS MOVED IN.

    MOSHE DAYAN CHATTED TO PEOPLE IN THE STREETS AND LISTENED TO THEIR COMPLAINTS.

    THE ISRAELI GOVERNMENT HAVE PROMISED TO PAY COMPENSATION OF PROVIDE NEW HOMES FOR THE EVICTED FAMILIES. IT IS REPORTED THAT ONE SHOP OWNER HAS BEEN PAID 150,000 ISRAELI POUNDS (17,644 STERLING) COMPENSATION.
