  • Description

A small crowd, in comparison with recent years, attended the first day of the Annual Paris Motor Show on Thursday (7th October). Thousands of motor enthusiasts normally queue for admission, but by mid-morning only a few hundred patrons were crowded around the exhibits. Car importers and manufacturers in France have been concerned at rising costs and doubtful about the commercial value os such shows, and the 1971 show has reflected this in its austere layout. There are few lavish drapings and furnishings as in past years. The early starts of the show, however, include the Renault 17-TS and the Fiat 127. The British Morris Marina was making its first appearance out of Britain, and several Japanese manufacturers had also gone to great trouble to present their new models. Enthusiasts looking for speed and comfort were not disappointed in the stands of Matra, Prosche and Lamborghini. A novel exhibit was a replica of the United Stats moon buggy.

SYNOPSIS: The 1971 Paris Motor Show opened to disappointing crowds on Thursday.

This Renault 17-TS proved to be one of the stars of the show. There were however few of the lavish drapes and trimmings of previous years to be seen on any stand. Manufacturers have felt the pinch of rising costs and have openly doubted the commercial value of such shows. The results was an austere layout. An appeal by President Pompidou to some manufacturers who had not intended exhibiting at the Show, kept the tradition unbroken. The Paris Motor Show is the oldest in the world.

The Morris Marina had its first showing outside Britain and attracted some interest.

A novel exhibit at the show was a replica of the United States' Apollo moon buggy.

    Among foreign exhibitors were Skoda.

Again this year Honda and other Japanese manufacturers had made a major effort to catch the eye. The baby Honda was one of several new mini-cars.

The Lamborghini stand was one of a select few to satisfy the luxury and speed enthusiast.

The organisers are hopeful of better attendances as the Show continues.
