  • Description

Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations, Major-General Yizhak Rabin, arrived at Tel Aviv today (Friday) to discuss Egypt's new peace proposals with his government.

SYNOPSIS: A new note of optimism has crept into the Middle-East peace talks. President Sadat of Egypt has said that he is prepared to sign a peace treaty with Israel, if Israel withdraw from the territories it occupied in 1967. And Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations, Major-General Yizhak Rabin, arrived in Tel Aviv on Friday to discuss the latest developments with his government -- there's to be a major cabinet meeting on Sunday.

There's considerable disquiet in Israel in case the USA should back the Arabs. But at the press conference, which Major-General Rabin held immediately at the airport, he told reporters that he did not know of any pressure being exerted on Israel by the United States government. The United Nations authorities seemed impressed by the Egyptian government's attitude. "If the Israeli answer were similarly forthcoming," said one U.N. official, "we could talk of a breakthrough".
