  • Description

In Italy, more than 30 Left-wing students were arrested in Rome at the weekend (25 February) during the worst clashes so far this year between university militants and the police. One student and a policemen were injured as demonstrators and riot squads fought street battles in two Rome suburbs.

SYNOPSIS: Heavily-armed police were patrolling the streets of Rome after angry students had damaged cars and buses and planted petrol bombs. Hundreds of students defied a police ban and tried to march on the capital in support of demands for large-scale education reforms.

The students took over several buses, emptied out the passengers and left three vehicles in flames to block traffic. They also used them as barricades against advancing riot police. Roads and squares were littered with tear gas grenades, broke glass and burning barricades of tyres. Two young children were taken to hospital with burns after youths, believed to be extreme right-wingers, attacked their home with petrol bombs.

One district headquarters of the Christian Democrat Party, and two offices of a neo-Fascist movement, were fire bombed. After a peaceful New Year on most Italian campuses, student violence has erupted during the past few days in college and schools. Professors have been attacked and class-rooms looted. The students are very upset about high unemployment among school-leavers and graduates, and they are also fed up with the education system.
