  • Description

ABORIGINE DEMONSTRATORS "MOURNED" THE RAPE OF AUSTRALIA AND VIRTUAL EXTERMINATION OF THEIR RACE IN A CEREMONY DEPLORING CAPTAIN COOK'S HISTORIC LANDING AT BOTANY BAY 200 YEARS AGO. IT HAPPENED ON WEDNESDAY (APRIL 29). AT THE SAME TIME, ON THE OTHER SIDE OF BOTANY BAY, BRITAIN'S QUEEN ELIZABETH WATCHED THE OFFICIAL RE-ENACTMENT OF COOK'S LANDING.

ABOUT 200 ABORIGINES, MANY WEARING RED HEADBANDS SYMBOLISING THE SPILLED BLOOD OF THEIR PEOPLE, CONGREGATED UNDER A TRADITIONAL MEETING TREE.

A PRINCESS OF THE YARRA YARRA PEOPLE, MRS M. NICHOLAS, WAS AMONG THE PROTESTERS WHO CARRIED PLACARDS INSCRIBED WITH THE NAMES OF EXTINCT TRIBES -- TRIBES WHICH FLOURISHED PRIOR TO THE BEGINNING OF THE BRITISH SETTLEMENT 200 YEARS AGO.

THE DEMONSTRATORS MOVED IN SMALL GROUPS DOWN TO THE SHORE WHERE THEY CAST WREATHS INTO THE WATER.

MEANWHILE, ACROSS THE BAY, OTHER ABORIGINES PLAYED THE PART OF THEIR ANCESTORS BY " THREATENING" CAPTAIN COOK IN THE OFFICIAL RE-ENACTMENT OF THE LANDING. THE CEREMONY WAS WATCHED BY QUEEN ELIZABETH, PRINCE PHILIP, PRINCESS ANNE AND A CROWD OF 20,000 AUSTRALIANS.
