  • Description

An ancient and somewhat barbaric ceremony took place Jan 13 at Whitbreads Brewery, London. 21-year old George Cassidy finished his five-years apprenticeship and became a fully fledged Cooper- or barrel maker. His reward; to be unceremoniously dumped into a barrel of his own making, liberally sprinkled with a messy concoction, and rolled around the Cooperage floor.

The ceremony consists of the apprentice making a barrel, which is then judged by a member of the Coopers Company. If he passes it, the apprentice's workmate Coopers begin to bind the barrel by heating it over a fire. The apprentice is carried over to it and stuffed inside. After various unspecified materials and liquids are poured into the barrel, it is then closed up and rolled around.

The now fully fledged Cooper is hauled out of the barrel and thrown into the air, beer is passed around to drink his health and a Director of the brewery hands him his Certificate of Qualification.
