  • Description

SOUTH KOREA SATURDAY SCORED A CONVINCING 2-0 WIN OVER JAPAN IN SEOUL ON SUNDAY (18 OCTOBER) TO KEEP ALIVE THEIR HOPES IN THE GROUP 15A WORLD CUP QUALIFYING SERIES. BOTH GOALS CAME IN THE FIRST HALF.

IT WAS SOUTH KOREA'S FIRST WIN IN THE SIX MATCH SERIES. A DEFEAT OR A DRAW WOULD HAVE GIVEN THE SERIES TO AUSTRALIA, BUT NOW AUSTRALIA WILL MEET SOUTH KOREA IN THE VITAL LAST MATCH, IN WHICH A SOUTH KOREAN WIN WILL NECESSITATE A PLAY-OFF.

THE SOUTH KOREAN GOALS CAME AT 17 MINUTES AND 40 MINUTES AFTER THE START AS THEY FOUGHT MUCH OF THE FIRST HALF IN JAPANESE TERRITORY. BOTH CAME FROM INTELLIGENT PLAY AND HAD THE 30,000 CROWD ROARING ITS APPRECIATION.

THE FIRST TIME, HAE TAIK LEE AND INSIDE-RIGHT KANG CHI CHUNG SPLIT THE JAPANESE DEFENCE WITH A QUICK EXCHANGE OF PASSES THAT EVENTUALLY LEFT CHUNG CLEAR TO SCORE WITH A LOW SHOT UNDER THE BODY OF THE DIVING GOALKEEPER, KOJI FUNAMOTO.

FIVE MINUTES FROM HALF-TIME, THE SOUTH KOREAN FORWARDS SURGED UPFIELD FROM THE CENTRE LINE, AND PUSHED THE BALL THROUGH THE MIDDLE FOR CHUNG TO SCORE ONCE MORE.

THE FAST-MOVING FORWARD LINE, AS IN PREVIOUS MATCHES, WAS THE HOST NATION'S STRONG POINT, BUT SOMETIMES THEIR CLOSE, SHORT-PASSING GAME FAILED TO CONNECT.
