  • Description

At Stonehenge, on the Salisbury Plain, hundreds of people waited to see the sunrise on the longest day of the year.

Some of them had been out all night and were kept amused by the Student's ad hoc skiffle group.

The grey stones of the circle were surrounded by a crowd of people who, for the first time, basked in the artificial light of flood lamps. Many hoped to see the first rays of the sun strike on the altar stone; others to watch the ceremonies of the Companions and Representatives of the Druid Order.

The Druid rites at the altar stone were conducted in exactly the same fashion as they have been for nearly three hundred years. But, as on so many previous years cloud and mist obscured the sunrise on this longest day of the year.
