    KENYA'S COTTON, LINT AND SEED MARKETING BOARD WILL BE PAYING OUT APPROXIMATELY 750,000 STERLING FOR THIS YEAR'S COTTON CROP FROM THE MWEA TABERE DISTRICT. MEANWHILE, PREPARATIONS HAVE BEEN GOING ON IN THE DISTRICT FOR THE SEASON'S FIRST COTTON SALES.

    COTTON GROWING WAS STARTED ONLY THREE YEARS AGO IN THE MWEA TABERE DISTRICT. IN 1964 ONLY 64 ACRES OF COTTON HAD BEEN PLANTED AS AN EXPERIMENTAL CROP, IN 1965 THE ACREAGE HAD INCREASED TO 500, AND THIS YEAR 3,000 ACRES ARE UNDER CULTIVATION. IT IS PLANNED TO PLANT 8,000 ACRES NEXT YEAR. THERE ARE ABOUT 1,500 FARMERS IN THE DISTRICT.

    APART FROM COTTON, THE AREA GROWS COFFEE, TEA AND RICE, COTTON NOW BEING THE THIRD HIGHEST-PAYING CROP.
