Background: A Greek Cypriot was murdered today in daylight, in Nicosia's notorious murder-mile. He was Christos Englozos, 35, a timber merchant. He leaves a wife and two children.

He was released from detention camp on February 1st this year after serving two years there. The killing took place in a yard off Ledra Street as he was returning to his car after shopping.

The shooting coincides with the distribution in Nicosia of EOKA leaflets, in which the terrorrist leader Colonel Grivas, writing under the code name Dighenis declares there is to be no compromise, and that total war on a full scale will follow.

No fewer than 7 bombs exploded in Famagusta today. One, said to be the largest the terrorrists have ever used, destroyed a warehouse at the docks. Another damaged a Naafi canteen. A limpet mine was found on the gangplank of a British ship in the harbour.

Police investigating the Englozos slaughter were in constant touch with HQ by radio. The area was searched for bullets, but none were found. And as children on their way home from school stopped and gaped, a police officer drove the victim's car to CID HQ.

This is the first shooting on the Murder Mile since EOKA called a truce on the 14th of March, 1957.
