  • Description

A meeting of Foreign Ministers from the River Plate countries in Latin America was held in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, on Monday (10th June). The meeting is the sixth the Ministers from Uruguay, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay have held.

President Juan Peron of Argentina addressed the opening session, calling for unity among the five countries. He said unity was necessary to defend their riches from "indiscriminate consumption." Sixty million people live in the region of the River Plate - some are wealthy but many are poor. The problems involved in developing the region were the major topics for discussion at the one-day conference.

Hydro-electric schemes in particular were a major talking point. The shared development of such projects is one of the major reasons for regional cooperation.

Argentina and Uruguay have undertaken a joint Hydro-electric project on the Uruguay River between the two countries and a dam is under construction. Argentine is also involved in another joint hydro-electric project with Paraguay on the Parana River - but this is still in the planning stages.
