  • Description

In Nepal, the girls got married between the age of two and ten. But they do not become child mothers - for there are no husbands.

It is a kind of spiritual marriage according to Hindu rites. The belief is that, as a result of this ceremony, a girl can never be regarded as a widow even if her real husband dies.

Once a year, throughout Nepal, there are mock wedding ceremonies. Mothers bring along their daughters who are dressed in traditional wedding clothes.

The ceremony follows the normal Hindu marriage rites with valuable ornaments, flowers and other holy objects being used. A priest recites the service and afterwards, in the best tradition, there is a sumptuous feast to celebrate the happy occasion - even though the husbands are present only in spirit.
