    THE EARTHQUAKE, ON MONDAY, SHOOK THE VALLEY FOR HALF A MINUTE, DESTROYING HUNDREDS OF HOUSES AND INJURING 500 VILLAGERS IN THE BADGAM DISTRICT.A VISNEWS CAMERAMAN WHO TRAVELLED WITH ARMY MEDICAL TEAMS INTO THE AREA YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) FOUND VILLAGERS STILL TRYING TO SALVAGE A FEW PRECIOUS BELONGINGS.MANY WERE SITTING IN MOURNING OVER THEIR DEAD BURIED BENEATH THE RUBBLE.

    THIS WAS THE BIGGEST EARTHQUAKE SINCE 1,029 PEOPLE WERE KILLED AT SKOPJE, YUGOSLAVIA, ON JULY 26 THIS YEAR.INDIA'S BIGGEST QUAKE WAS IN 1935 AT QUETTA -- NOW IN WEST PAKISTAN -- WHEN MORE THAN 25,000 PEOPLE DIED.
