Background: The governments of the United States and Pakistan have signed and agreement under which the United States will provide Pakistan with 40 F-16 fighter aircraft and other military equipment. It is the first of a series of agreements fro defence and economic aid, worth altogether more than 3,000 million U.S. dollars which the two countries intend to enter into in the next five years. The first agreement was formally concluded at a ceremony at the Pakistan Secretariat building in Islamabad on Tuesday, April 13th. Ambassador Ronald I. Spiers signed for the United States and Mr. Ejaz A. Naik, Secretary of Economic Affairs, for Pakistan. Later agreements will provide support for Pakistan's balance of payments and help to increase its agricultural production. The military aspects of the package have been strongly criticised by India and the Soviet Union.
