  • Description

THE PEOPLE OF EIRE WENT TO THE POLLS TODAY (WEDNESDAY) TO ELECT A PRESIDENT. OUTGOING PRESIDENT EAMON DE VALERA, WAS AMONG THE EARLY VOTERS. HE SEEKS A SECOND SEVEN-YEAR TERM, FACING MR. THOMAS O'HIGGINS, A DUBLIN LAWYER, AS HIS ONLY OPPONENT.

MR. DE VALERA, 83-YEAR-OLD SOLDIER, SCHOLAR AND STATESMEN WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT IN 1959 AFTER HEADING THE IRISH REPUBLIC'S RULING FIANNA FAIL (SOLDIERS OF DESTINY) PARTY, WHICH HE HELPED TO FOUND, FOR MORE THAN THIRTY YEARS.

HIS POWERFUL CHALLENGER, MR. O'HIGGINS, WHO IS 49-YEARS-OLD, FOUGHT AN AMERICAN-STYLE CAMPAIGN WITH THE PLEA THAT EIRE SHOULD MOVE AWAY FROM ITS ISOLATIONIST TRADITIONS AND SEEK CLOSER LINKS WITH EUROPE.

MR. DE VALERA WAS SILENT THROUGHOUT THE CAMPAIGN ON THE GROUND THAT HIS PRESIDENTIAL OFFICE PUTS HIM OUTSIDE POLITICS.

AT THE LAST ELECTION, MR. DE VALERA HAD A MAJORITY OF 120,467 OVER HIS OPPONENT, GENERAL SEAN MACEOIN. ONLY 54 PER CENT OF THE ELECTORATE VOTED THEN.

THERE ARE 17,700,000 VOTERS. COUNTING IS EXPECTED TO END TOMORROW (THURSDAY) EVENING.
