  • Description

Greek Cypriots demonstrated in Kyrenia yesterday (Friday December the 11th) in an effort to get the Cypriot Government to open to them the main Kyrenia-Nicosia road which runs through Turkish held territory.

If that does not happen they want the Government to build a new road shorter than the 40 miles (65 kms) they have to travel at present to reach the capital.

Turkish Cypriots have commanded the main Nicosia-Kyrenia road since the inter-communal strife seven years ago. Greek Cypriots are able to travel along it only with a convoy under command of the United Nations peace-keeping force on the island. Foreigners can use the road at any time.

A Greek cypriot newspaper has reported that some Kyrenia residents planned to blow up part of the main road so that no one could use it.

A Turkish-Cypriot news bulletin recently claimed that the Turks could not relinquish their hod on the road without seriously jeopardising their own security. The news bulletin alleged that the demonstrations were organised by land speculators who were trying to force the Government into building a new road through the district where they had bought land.
