  • Description

TENS OF THOUSANDS OF EGYPTIANS PACKED CAIRO'S REPUBLIC SQUARE LAST NIGHT, (FRIDAY), FOR THE FIRST EVER MAY DAY RALLY HELD IN THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC. THE GAILY DECORATED SQUARE RESOUNDED TO LOUD CHEERS AS WORKERS STAGED A PARADE BEFORE A SPEECH GIVEN BY PRESIDENT NASSER.

THE ADDRESS INCLUDED A BITTER ATTACK ON BRITAIN AND A WARNING THAT IF ECONOMIC SANCTIONS WERE APPLIED TO THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC AS A MEANS OF FORCING HER TO END THE YEMEN CONFLICT, SHE WOULD, IN TURN, APPLY SANCTIONS OF A SIMILAR NATURE.

REFERRING SPECIFICALLY TO BRITAIN, PRESIDENT NASSER SAID: "WE LEARN THAT THE BRITISH FOREIGN MINISTER ASKED THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT TO IMPOSE ECONOMIC SANCTIONS ON THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC." HE CONTINUED: "WE ARE A PEOPLE WHO CAN STAND ON OUR OWN FEET. IF SANCTIONS ARE TO BE IMPOSED, THEN IT WE WHO ARE IN A POSITION TO IMPOSE THEM ON THE BRITISH."
PRESIDENT NASSER'S ATTACK FOLLOWED A RECENT VISIT TO NEW YORK BY MR. BUTLER, BRITAIN'S FOREIGN MINISTER, WHO WAS ALLEGEDLY SUPPOSED TO HAVE THE U.S. TO END ECONOMIC AID TO THE YEMEN AS A MEANS OF ENDING THE WAR BETWEEN THE REPUBLICANS AND ROYALISTS.
