Background: THE VILLAGERS OF KOKKINA, THE ONLY TURKISH CYPRIOT SETTLEMENT STILL SURROUNDED BY GREEK CYPRIOTS IN NORTH-WEST CYPRUS HAVE RECEIVED FOOD AND BLANKETS FROM THE UNITED NATIONS, IN THE ORGANISATION'S FIRST DIRECT INTERVENTION IN SUPPLYING EITHER OF THE DISPUTING SIDES.

YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) TWO HELICOPTERS WERE USED TO TRANSPORT 8,000 POUNDS (4,000 KILOS) OF FOOD FROM UNITED NATIONS STORES ON THE ISLAND. THE DECISION TO SEND THE SUPPLIES FOLLOWED THE ANNOUNCEMENT ON SATURDAY BY PRESIDENT MAKARIOS THAT HE WOULD ALLOW ADEQUATE SUPPLIES OF FOOD TO BE SENT INTO THE VILLAGE.

KOKKINA HAS BEEN A RESTRICTED AREA SINCE THE TURKISH AIR ATTACKS LAST AUGUST. THE FOOD AIRLIFT WAS "A FULL SUCCESS", A UNITED NATIONS SPOKESMAN SAID LATER, THE VILLAGERS APPEARED "VERY HAPPY" ABOUT THE RELIEF SUPPLIES, HE SAID.

BEFORE THE OPERATION, THE VILLAGERS HAD ONLY FOR AND A HALF TONS OF FOOD IN 35 DAYS, ACCORDING TO A STATEMENT FROM GENERAL KODENDERA THIMAYYA, COMMANDER OF THE UNITED NATIONS FORCE. HE DESCRIBED REQUIREMENTS OF THREE TONS OF FOOD DAILY AS "NOT UNREASONABLE" FOR THE 1,400 PEOPLE OF KOKKINA.
