  • Description

GERALD BROOKE, THE BRITISH LECTURER IMPRISONED IN RUSSIA IN APRIL 1965 ON CHARGES OF ANTI-SOVIET ACTIVITIES, WAS RELEASE EARLY TODAY AND FLOWN BACK TO LONDON ABOARD A SOVIET AIRLINER.

HE WAS RE-UNITED WITH HIS WIFE AND MOTHER ON ARRIVAL AT LONDON AIRPORT. HE FACED CAMERAMEN AND REPORTERS TO ANSWER A FEW BRIEF QUESTIONS BEFORE RETURNING TO HIS HOME IN NORTH LONDON.

GERALD BROOKE - A LECTURER IN RUSSIAN AT A LONDON COLLEGE-SERVED JUST OVER FOUR YEARS OF A FIVE-YEAR LABOUR CAMP SENTENCE ON CHARGES OF BRINGING ANTI-SOVIET LITERATURE AND PRINTING MATERIALS INTO THE COUNTRY ON BEHALF OF A RUSSIAN EMIGRE ORGANISATION. HIS WIFE WAS RELEASED THE DAY AFTER THEIR JOINT ARREST.

MR. BROOKE - LOOKING PALE AND DRAWN - TOLD REPORTERS AT LONDON AIRPORT HE HAD HEARD ONLY YESTERDAY THAT HE WAS TO BE RELEASED. HE APPEARED NERVOUS AND ILL AT EASE AS HE FACED OVER 100 NEWSMEN AND CAMERAMEN. HE EXPLAINED THAT HE HADN'T GOT USED TO SPEAKING ENGLISH AGAIN. HE SPOKE OF HIS JOY AT BEING REUNITED WITH HIS WIFE AND MOTHER, BUT ALSO ABOUT THE DETERIORATION IN HIS HEALTH: HIS INTESTINAL ILLNESS-COLITIS - HAD BEEN AGGRAVATED BY THE SORT OF FOOD HE WAS GIVEN IN RUSSIA. HE SAID HE HAD ENJOYED HIS CAVIAR MEAL ON THE SOVIET AIRLINER. HE FENDED OFF QUESTIONS ON HIS TREATMENT IN SOVIET JAILS, SAYING HE WOULD HAVE TO THINK TOO LONG ABOUT THE ANSWERS AND IT WOULD TAKE TOO LONG TO EXPLAIN.

(MR. BROOKE'S RELEASE FOLLOWED A SERIES OF CONFERENCES IN LONDON BETWEEN SOVIET AMBASSADOR MIKHAIL SMIRNOVSKY AND SIR DENIS GREENHILL, PERMANENT UNDER-SECRETARY AT THE FOREIGN OFFICE. BRITISH OFFICIALS EXPLAINED THAT THE OBJECT OF NEGOTIATIONS WAS TO AVERT A SECOND TRIAL ON FRESH CHARGES WITH WHICH BROOKE HAD BEEN THREATENED. THEY REFUSED TO COMMENT ON MOUNTING SPECULATION AS TO WHETHER BRITAIN HAD AGREED TO RELEASE PETER AND HELEN KROGER, CONVICTED ON CHARGES OF ESPIONAGE ON BEHALF OF THE SOVIET UNION IN 1961.

A BRITISH EMBASSY SPOKESMAN IN MOSCOW SAID TODAY THAT THE BRITISH FOREIGN SECRETARY WOULD BE MAKING A FULL STATEMENT IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS LATER IN THE DAY.)
