  • Description

In Greece on Sunday ( 29 November ) 1,200 specially appointed electors cast their votes in an election which provided 92 names from which Prime Minister George Papadopoulus will select a 56-member advisory committee called the mini-parliament. The country's first elected parliament, since the Colonels' Revolution of April 1967, will be without powers or political responsibility.

The voters, who attended the polling booths in town and city halls throughout Greece, were selected by the Government from nine professional and scientific organisations, In Athens the meeting of electors was presided over by a Court Magistrate. Among the electors was the Mayor of Athens, Mr. Demetrius Ritsos, and Mr. Skylitsis, Mayor of Piraeus.

The new parliament members, with age limited between 25 and 50, will sit from 1st January in Athens. They will debate bills before they are passed on for discussion and decision by the ruling military regime. The Greek electorate has been told that there will be no return to full parliamentary rule until the military government has succeeded in its social, economic and cultural programmes.
