Background: The violent storms which swept across northern Spain have died away, leaving four people dead and a trial of damage across the area. One man died during the first gales and floods on June the 13th and another three people died on Monday (20 June) in a violent electrical storm.But the rain has now ended and work has began on repairing some of the damage to the roads and building in the Basque region near Bilbao.

SYNOPSIS:The River Belaco near the town of Las Arenas was one of eight rivers to break its banks. Bridges were brought down and large numbers of animals were killed. Many farmers were forced to move their stock to higher ground.

Winds blew down electricity and telephone lines and rain flooded power plants, leaving several towns in the dark. Flooding and landslides blocked some roads and severely damaged others. Winds of 90 kilometres an hour (55 mph) were reported in the first storm, and the para-military Civil Guard evacuated people trapped in their homes by the rising waters. Others people were stranded by collapsed bridges and blocked roads.

Much of the work to clear the roads has been hampered by the continuing bad weather. Two of the people who died on Monday were crushed when a wall collapsed. The third victim was struck by lightning while sheltering in a stable. But long-range weather forecasts say the outlook's improving, and repair work should be able to continue unhampered.
